Avonmouth & Severnside — BS10 / BS11

Mezzanine Floors in Avonmouth, Bristol

Unlocking vertical cubic capacity across the UK's premier South West logistics and industrial gateway.

Mezzanine floor design, supply & installation in Avonmouth

Avonmouth stands as the primary logistics power hub of the West of England. Built around the deep-water facilities of Royal Portbury Dock and the Avonmouth Docks, the surrounding industrial landscape handles millions of tonnes of automotive cargo, bulk freight, ambient food storage and e-commerce goods annually. The port logistics ecosystem creates a unique operational tempo — fast stock turnover, massive freight throughput and a constant requirement for flexible, scalable footprint inside the shed.

The Severnside industrial corridor along the A403 (Severn Road) hosts Hallen Industrial Estate, St Andrews Trading Estate, King's Weston Industrial Estate, Central Park and Mountpark Avonmouth. Concentrated within the BS10 and BS11 postcode zones, Avonmouth has one of the highest densities of warehouse footprint per square mile anywhere in the South West.

Strategic transport arteries

The logistics dominance of BS10 and BS11 relies on direct motorway access. The M5 Junctions 18 and 18A provide immediate access north to the Midlands and south to Devon and Cornwall. The M49 offers a direct bypass across the Severnside marshes to the Prince of Wales Bridge (M4 J22) for fast freight movement into South Wales. M4 Junction 20 at Almondsbury connects east towards London and the M25 and west to Cardiff. From a core Avonmouth base we also cover Filton, Patchway, Aztec West, Cribbs Causeway, Pilning, Severn Beach, Portishead and Clevedon.

Why Avonmouth warehouses are ideal for mezzanine floors

Modern units across Central Park, Western Park and along the A403 are built with clear eaves heights ranging from 8.0m up to 14.0m clear to underside of haunch. Leaving this vertical volume unexploited results in substantial commercial inefficiency — occupiers pay rent and rates on total footprint while using only the lower 3 metres of air space. Installing a single or multi-tier mezzanine floor doubles or triples usable floor area without increasing the outer footprint or triggering a lease renegotiation.

Three factors are accelerating demand for mezzanine floors in Avonmouth specifically: port expansion at Royal Portbury Dock driving demand for immediate secondary processing and buffer storage close to the quay; the Avonmouth Severnside Enterprise Area (ASEA) tax incentives and streamlined planning frameworks driving speculative build; and post-Brexit bonded warehousing demand from 3PLs and importers requiring dedicated secure mezzanine decks for customs inspections, duty-suspended storage and return-merchandise processing.

24/7 port and distribution operations mean structural floors must be designed, phased and erected with zero disruption to continuous inbound and outbound lorry movements. Cold store and ambient operations often co-exist under the same roof — mezzanines bridging insulated composite panel structures require specialist point-load distribution plates to protect floor slab insulation and prevent thermal bridging.

Technical specification for Avonmouth operations

Every mezzanine engineered for Avonmouth sheds is manufactured using hot-rolled universal beams and cold-formed galvanised C/Z floor joists, tailored to heavy industrial utilisation. Column grids are custom engineered up to 8.0m × 6.0m or wider using heavy UC sections, keeping ground-floor forklift aisleways and marshalling lanes clear.

Floor loading specifications

  • 360 kg/m²Light office, staff canteens, clean assembly, light archive storage
  • 500 kg/m²Standard logistics, hand-pallet truck traffic, medium-density shelving, e-commerce picking
  • 720 kg/m²Heavy-duty bulk storage, automated conveyor staging, palletised storage, light manufacturing
  • 1,000+ kg/m² (bespoke)Automated pick towers, AMR/AGV sorting decks, heavy machinery platforms

Staircases & access

Industrial staircases designed to BS 5395 Part 3 and Building Regulations Part K and Part M. Multi-shift access options include open-riser utility stairs for industrial areas and closed-riser with non-slip contrast nosings for high-traffic areas. Pitch options: 45° industrial utility stairs for compact footprints; 33°/38° gentle-rise for public or high-density staff access. Mid-landings built in for travel heights exceeding 3.6 metres.

Pallet gates & goods hoists

Up-and-over safety gates, sliding gates and edge-pivoting safety barriers maintain a continuous safety barrier whether open or closed. Integrated hydraulic goods elevators and vertical reciprocating conveyors with load capacities from 250kg up to 3,000kg, recessed into or surface-mounted alongside the mezzanine edge.

Fire safety & edge protection

Mezzanines exceeding 20 metres in length or width, covering over 50% of the ground floor area, or accommodating more than 20 people must be fire-rated (1-hour fire resistance) under Building Regulations Part B. This is achieved via suspended fire ceilings, column cladding cases and fascia protection around all exposed edges. In high-bay units equipped with ESFR sprinkler arrays, we integrate secondary under-deck sprinkler pipework and smoke baffle curtains tied to the building's main fire riser. Edge protection is provided to BS 6180: 1,100mm top handrail, mid-rail and 150mm steel kickboard.

Statutory compliance for Avonmouth installations

All mezzanine installations within Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council jurisdictions must fully comply with Building Regulations Part A (structural integrity), Part B (fire safety), Part K and M (staircase, handrails and disabled access), PUWER 1998, Work at Height Regulations 2005, CDM Regulations 2015 and HSE guidance HSG76 on warehousing and storage safety.

We act as both Principal Designer and Principal Contractor on medium-to-large Avonmouth projects, managing risk assessments, method statements (RAMS), site welfare and safety files under CDM 2015.

Installation with minimal operational disruption

Steel components are fully fabricated, pre-drilled and finished off-site, delivered flat-packed on flatbed trailers scheduled via M5 Junction 18 directly to site, timed to avoid A403 peak-hour congestion. The warehouse floor is segregated using safety barriers and dust protection curtains; construction is completed in stages, leaving adjacent aisles and dock doors fully open to forklift trucks and picking staff throughout. Out-of-hours and weekend schedules are available for 24/7 port and distribution operations.

A standard 1,000 m² structural mezzanine floor is typically erected, decked and handed over within 5 to 8 working days. Final handover includes Load Notice Plates, Building Control sign-off, O&M Manual and the Health and Safety File under CDM 2015.
