Choosing a Mezzanine Deck
The deck is both a working surface and part of the structural floor build-up. High-density particleboard is a common choice for dry storage and general industrial use, while steel decking may be considered where durability, finish, environment or the wider fire strategy calls for a different solution.
Selection should account for loading, foot and trolley traffic, slip resistance, cleaning, moisture exposure, services and the activity beneath the floor. Openings for lifts, conveyors or services need to be coordinated before manufacture wherever possible.
Planning Staircases and Access Routes
Stair location affects workflow, escape travel and the useful area on both levels. The number, width and arrangement of stairs depend on the floor's use, occupancy and the project-specific Building Regulations assessment.
Industrial storage, offices and areas open to the public do not necessarily share the same access requirements. Landings, guarding and headroom should be designed as part of the complete layout, not added after the steel grid has been fixed.
Handrails, Kick Plates and Pallet Openings
Open edges require a coordinated guarding system suited to the environment. Handrails, intermediate rails and kick plates help protect people and objects, while pallet-transfer points need a gate arrangement that maintains a barrier between the operative and the exposed edge.
Up-and-over, pivoting and sliding pallet gates solve different space and handling constraints. The opening size, load dimensions, ceiling clearance and forklift approach should be confirmed before a gate is selected.
When Fire Protection May Be Required
Fire requirements depend on the building, floor area, use, occupancy, escape routes and the fire strategy for the premises. Measures can include protection to the underside of the deck and columns, protected escape routes, detection, emergency lighting or changes to existing fire systems.
These measures should be resolved through the design and Building Regulations process. A specification taken from another building may not be suitable, even when the mezzanine is a similar size.
Coordinate the Package Before Ordering
Decking, stairs, guarding, pallet access, fire protection and building services all affect one another. Coordinating them during survey and design reduces late changes and gives building control a clearer package to assess.
