What Is a Mezzanine Floor?

A mezzanine floor is a structural steel intermediate floor installed within an existing building — typically a warehouse, factory or distribution centre — to create an additional level of usable floor space without extending the building footprint or roof. It is supported on steel columns fixed to the ground floor slab and spans between those columns on steel beams and floor decking.

A well-designed mezzanine floor can effectively double the usable floor area of a building at a fraction of the cost of a new building or warehouse extension. For businesses that have outgrown their space, a mezzanine floor is often the most cost-effective solution available.

Types of Mezzanine Floor

Free-standing mezzanine floors are the most common type. They are structurally independent of the building — supported entirely on their own columns — and can be installed in any building with sufficient clear height. They can also be dismantled and relocated if you move premises.

Rack-supported mezzanine floors use pallet racking as the structural support for the mezzanine deck. The racking serves a dual purpose — storing goods at ground level and supporting the floor above. This is the most space-efficient configuration where both storage and floor space are needed simultaneously.

Shelving-supported mezzanine floors use industrial shelving as the structural support. Suited to lighter duty applications — offices, picking areas and light storage above.

What Can a Mezzanine Floor Be Used For?

Mezzanine floors are used for an enormous variety of applications. Storage mezzanines create additional warehouse storage above the ground floor operational area. Office mezzanines create first floor office space within a warehouse building — bringing offices and operations together under one roof. Picking and packing mezzanines create dedicated order fulfilment areas above the main warehouse floor. Production mezzanines create additional manufacturing floor space without building extensions.
